High-Impact Student Experiences
Austin Legislative Days
Austin Legislative Days is a high-impact experience that gives selected UT Permian Basin students an inside look at the Texas Legislature and the policymaking process that shapes the Lone Star State.
In partnership with the Midland and Odessa Chambers of Commerce, students join business, civic, and community leaders from across the Permian Basin for several days of legislative briefings, meetings with elected officials, and discussions on the issues most important to West Texas. The experience offers students a unique opportunity to observe state government in action while building relationships with leaders from across the region.
Through a competitive application process, approximately 10 students have participated in each biannual Austin Legislative Days program since 2023.
The Austin Legislative Days reflect the Shepperd Leadership Institute's commitment to developing the next generation of leaders by connecting students with the people and public policies that shape Texas. Students return with a broader understanding of state government, meaningful professional connections, and greater confidence in their ability to engage in civic and public leadership.
Washington D.C. Fly-In
The Washington, D.C. Fly-In is a high-impact experience that provides selected UT Permian Basin students with firsthand exposure to public policy, civic leadership, and the federal legislative process.
In partnership with the Midland and Odessa Chambers of Commerce, students join community, business, and civic leaders from across the Permian Basin for several days of briefings and meetings with policymakers and national leaders. Participants gain a deeper understanding of the issues shaping West Texas while exploring the role that leadership, collaboration, and public service play in addressing complex challenges.
Through a competitive application process, approximately 6–10 students have participated in each biannual Fly-In, since its inception in 2022.
The Washington, D.C. Fly-In exemplifies the Shepperd Leadership Institute's commitment to preparing students for informed leadership and engaged citizenship. By connecting classroom learning with real-world experiences, participants return to campus with a broader perspective, stronger professional networks, and a deeper appreciation for public service and civic engagement.
